Starting a new digital painting series
This is a doodling around draft image, and as you can see, I'm still learning this medium. And hoo boy do I have a long way to go. But I have a series of illustrations in my head that I really want to do, so I think it'll be worth it to spend the time to develop a new style to do them in.

New paintings from my Toronto show now online
on my website. I've collected the paintings in the show under the following link: Elaine Fleck Gallery - November 2013
The show is still up for another week or so in case you're in Toronto and would like to go see the paintings in person. The paintings do look so much better in person than they do online.
When my friends came to the opening they were all commenting about how they loved the texture in the paintings and how they were surprised to see it because it doesn't show up in the online photos. I'm not sure how to capture the texture better, but maybe it's something I'll have to work on.

Moving photo posts to Tumblr
My work-in-progress photos often look pretty craptacular when I post using Blogpress & Blogger, so I'm going to switch to Tumblr for those.
I'll still post on this blog with announcements and when I post the photos for finished paintings because this feed is what I programmed to show up on my website home page.

Boreal skies II - Underpainting workinprogress
I often wish I could say it's finished at this stage, but really, it's nowhere close, knowing how the paintings look when they're finished.
Also, I've deleted all the social media apps off of my phone in an effort to avoid being distracted while I get ready for this upcoming show, so my twitter feed will be quiet for a while. I'll keep posting my progress to this blog though.
Cheers,
Marcel

Announcement: Marcel Guldemond art show, this November, in Toronto
Hello Everyone,
I hope you’ve all had a nice summer. I can’t speak for anyone else, but for me summer always seems to be over much too quickly. This one was nice and we did take the kids outside as much as we could, but it’s always over before it actually feels like it was a summer. One thing I did do was clean up and re-organized my studio, and I’m hopeful that the reorganization will allow me to be a little more productive.
Which is something I’m going to need because I have another show coming up this November at the Elaine Fleck Gallery in Toronto. The opening will be Thursday November 7th, at 6pm. More details here: http://www.elainefleckgallery.com/events.html
Special thanks to my employers at Fluid Media Inc. for being so flexible and allowing me to take some time away from work to get my paintings ready for the show.
work in progress photo of a style I'm experimenting with: putting a painting into a comic book type panel as a kind of inset, with a more abstract background around it. |
November seems far away, but it really isn’t, and I’m already getting wound up about whether this next set of paintings will compare well with my previous shows.
Check in on my my blog or on twitter to see how the painting’s going and if it is indeed matching up. The robot in the top image will be there, and I'm planning on some big story book type landscapes, but I can't really say yet what the final results are going to be. Stay tuned!
Cheers,
Marcel

Standing on a terrace - coastal workinprogress
finished the image part, abstract background coming up. I'm happy with how this is turning out, I just hope I don't mess it up from here. Ack.
Also, I now have a show coming up in November in Toronto at the Elaine Fleck gallery, and I'm hoping this piece will be in it. I'll post the details tomorrow. Yay.
Cheers,
Marcel

Robot - fish painting, finished
I think I like it, although I'll have to hang it up for while to be sure. Here's a quick phone-photo:
Proper photos to come in a few weeks. I want to finish the third experimental painting first. I'll post some workinprogress photos of that later today.
Cheers,
Marcel

Small Canadiana
Hey look, new art!
This piece is part of a commission I'm
just finishing.
Now to try to figure out what my next set of big paintings is going to be. I've been thinking a lot about where to go with the next pieces, but I haven't managed to figure it out yet, and I'm not sure I have time to really do a lot of experimentation.
Cheers,
Marcel

After the show is up, cleaning the studio and other house keeping
I've been feeling pretty worn out after getting my current show together, so my energy and creativity have been fairly low since then. In the meantime, I've turned my attention to cleaning up and re-arranging the studio so it'll function better as a creative space.
I've also ordered some new brushes. It's a happy thing when they arrive from rosemary & co in the uk. My previous favourite brushes were discontinued generic house brand that I pulled from the clearance bin, and I've been struggling to find something comparable ever since. These fit the bill though, so I'm really happy about that, and these new ones are making more excited to get back to painting.
Cheers,
Marcel

new paintings re-added to the website
see them here: http://www.marcelguldemond.com/Artwork/Series?seriesName=wall%20space%20gallery%202013&PageNumber=1
I had to re-add them because the most recent backup that we had of the site was from January.

Website is back up! :)
Special thanks to Dave and Justin for finding a backup and installing it on another server.
The backup is from January, so it's missing the newer paintings, but I can easily add those back later on.
Cheers,
Marcel

I'll be pretty much locked in my studio until the show at Wallspace in June, so I don't really expect to have time to post much here until after the show is up.

Show Hype - imaginary narrative illustrationism / impressionistic comics
I just wrote this about my upcoming show:
These paintings are mostly about stories, the kinds of stories we use to understand our place
in the universe, the ones we use to understand each other, the ones that show us how we
each got to 'here', this particular point in our lives. More specifically, the paintings are scenes
where these kinds of stories could happen.
In that sense, they could be seen as illustrations of imaginary novels, so you could say
they're a kind of imaginary narrative illustrationism. Or you could just say they're big
impressionistic comics.
That'll probably get edited again, but I think it describes things pretty well.
Cheers,
Marcel

So many ideas, so little time! (Which one to do?)
What's my next painting going to be? I've been having trouble working it out, so I redrew all of the better ideas I've had in the last couple of weeks onto one page. Holy schmoly!
I could make a whole show out of just these! A pretty big show at that!
And the reality is that I'll get just _one_ into the next show. :-/
Kind of frustrating, on one hand, great on the other because I have a lot to work with.
Now how the hell do I figure out which one to do?
Cheers,
Marcel

warm up robot comics sketch
... with his low rider bicycle
I'm having a bit of fun playing around with Corel Painter, which I just bought because it was on sale. No idea if I'll ever use it for anything art projects, but I often feel like I need to stay in touch with comics and digital art. Speaking of projects, I have to get to the studio to get some paintings done for my show coming up.

Out to sea : workinprogress
Detail photo. I'm happy with how this one's working out, but that feeling is always countered by the nagging suspicion that I'm going to find some major unfixable flaw by the time it's done.
Ah well, that's part of the process, and I'm definitely happy to be able to be in a studio messing around with the paint. :)
Hope you all have a happy Friday!
Cheers,
Marcel
Update: I just changed my Blogpress settings to use google for the images, instead of the blogpress site, which I think was making the image look kind of crappy. Should be better now, especially if you click on it to get the full size version.

What's next? (With robot doodles)
Now that my show in Toronto is up, it's time to start thinking about my Ottawa show in June. I'm not really sure what I'm going to do, so I'm starting with aimless doodles. I'll find something in one of them eventually that'll crystallize everything. I also really need to do some house keeping like filing and ordering of supplies, etc.
Cheers,
Marcel
