<br />
And yes, it seems just when I've sorted out a mode of painting that really suits me and seems to be a coherent integration of everything I wanted to do with painting, I'm going to abandon it and change again.<br />
<br />
Wait, abandon it? Yes, I'm going to abandon it. Why? Because of the looming climate crisis that threatens the survival of human civilization. Why now? I guess I should've started this years ago, and I guess I was hoping that I could do things to help while still maintaining an art career in painting, but now I'm abandoning that hope. The situation is too urgent for half measures, for divided efforts. Making paintings that enrich people's homes, while a good thing in and of itself, just doesn't seem to be an effective way to help society mobilize to cut emissions.<br />
<br />
This is going to be a journey. I haven't yet figured out how to best help with the climate mobilization effort, and most of the arts communities around the world haven't figured this out yet either.<br />
<br />
I have been working through a lot of thoughts on the topic, and I'll try to post some of my conclusions here as I embark on this journey.<br />
<br />
I'm currently working towards something that involves climate themed online comics and digital artwork.<br />

<br />
I've recently finished a few digital art pieces with climate change themes. <a href="https://www.redbubble.com/people/marcelguldemond/portfolio" target="_blank">You can also find them on my Redbubble site.</a><br />

<br />
I’ve started making small sized painted print artwork (8”x10”) <a href="http://www.marcelguldemond.com/Artwork/Series/8x10%20painted%20print/1" target="_blank">which I’ve posted online here.</a><br />

(hopefully it's not terribly boring)<span style="font-size: large;">I've just finished redoing my artist's statement for a show application. I've been thinking about doing this for a while, but when it came time to actually write it, I got pretty stuck. Writing about your own art is hard. And then I realized the solution while in the shower this morning, so I quickly wrote it down. Here's a more refined version, without the autocorrects and typos:</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span><br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
<span style="font-size: large;"><span style="background-color: white;"><br /></span><span style="background-color: white;">At some point in the past I became aware of the fact that we understand ourselves and our lives primarily through stories. I became aware that they are a basic human need, that we need to consume stories, and we need to tell them.</span></span></blockquote>
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
<span style="font-size: large;"><span style="background-color: white;">So I started adding figures and robots to landscape paintings, to make them into scenes from imaginary novels, giving them a narrative aspect.<br /> </span><span style="background-color: white;"><br /></span><span style="background-color: white;">This worked well, but then I recalled my past as an indie self-publishing comic book creator, and realized that the paintings could incorporate even more storytelling. For what is a more visual storytelling medium than comics?</span></span></blockquote>
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
<span style="background-color: white;"><span style="font-size: large;">So I started incorporating elements from comic books, such as adding inset images in panels. Sorting out how to compose a painting with this new level of complexity took time and a lot of trial and error. Man, did it take a lot of errors.</span></span></blockquote>
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
<span style="font-size: large;"><span style="background-color: white;">And along the way, as I was still figuring that out, I realized I could add another level of narrative and storytelling to the painting: I could put text itself into the paintings. So I started adding actual fragments of stories that I loved, or ones that influenced me, by adding random bits text from those stories to the base layers of the paintings.<br /> </span><span style="background-color: white;"><br /></span><span style="background-color: white;">The randomness of the fragments is important. It’s important because I’m not trying to tell a linear story or squeeze a whole novel into the paintings: our lives are semi-chaotic assemblages of bits of the stories we’ve read, watched, and told to ourselves. Our lives don’t unfold in clear linear plots with well-organized themes. So the random text and the comic book inset panels create new meanings and associations. The paintings are intended to give the viewer a landscape and some starting points to imagine their own versions of the story. I guess they could be called story-scapes.</span></span></blockquote>
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
<span style="background-color: white;"><span style="font-size: large;">And that’s how I’ve arrived at this point in my creative work, where I’ve recently, finally, started to feel like I know how this works, with text and comics and painting and storytelling.</span></span></blockquote>
<span style="background-color: white;"><br /></span>

<br />
They're now posted on my website <a href="http://www.marcelguldemond.com/Artwork/Series/landscape/1" target="_blank">under the 'landscape' series</a> - since I made them for the Canada 150 show, I selected all of the text from Canadian authors: R. Davies, J. Urquhart, S. Leacock, M. Attwood, M. Richler, S. Mclean, W.T.Little<br />
<br />
Here's one of the paintings - 10" oil sketch (The West Wind):<br />

<br />
This project was a lot of fun to work on, as you can see by the illustrations themselves.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://marcelguldemond.com/Artwork/Series/illustration/1" target="_blank"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-KL3eJCeaUWI/WMxA5o-6iUI/AAAAAAAAG-I/NdlzLDMWQmcojM4_4-Aqy6n3ktWRnAoXQCLcB/s400/No_hockey.png" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Here's me with the poster at the rink a few weeks ago:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-k512cCFmYBo/WMxAosbpGxI/AAAAAAAAG-A/oZl4JvZos2Q4RRZtlNAZ2YDqlwqWpHGTQCLcB/s1600/IMG_6556.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-k512cCFmYBo/WMxAosbpGxI/AAAAAAAAG-A/oZl4JvZos2Q4RRZtlNAZ2YDqlwqWpHGTQCLcB/s400/IMG_6556.JPG" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
The design of the room and the rules poster was put together by my talented neighbour Carla Ayukawa.<br />
<br />

Here's the new painting I just finished. I'd like to blab on about it for a bit, if I may...<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><span style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><a href="http://www.marcelguldemond.com/Artwork/DetailsSeries/944" target="_blank"><img alt="" class="aligncenter" height="299" id="blogsy-1474575358334.2205" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-sZOvsmndtXI/V-Q7_XJMNrI/AAAAAAAAG6E/SbHJ7FhUOvs/s500/Photo%25252020160922161553823.jpg" width="500" /></a></span></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.marcelguldemond.com/Artwork/DetailsSeries/944" target="_blank">"wander heart summer breeze" 36x60 (click for details)</a></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
After two or three years of changing my style, and forcing myself out of my artistic comfort zone, I've finally got something in this painting that feels like, uh, hmmm, feels like it's where I wanted to go with this whole style change thing, actually. This piece is integrating comics and narrative, compositional flexibility, and richness of colour.<br />
<br />
I think I can really do a lot with this style going forward, and I might actually be done changing my style for quite a while. Which is good, because changing your style for an artist is a risky thing: the partly evolved artwork will vary wildly in quality so it'll be hard to feel good about it. It probably won't sell well, you'll lose customers who like your old work better, and you won't have a consistent series of work that a gallery can promote to their customers. And it can get worse from there:<br />
<br />
You end up with a pile of failed experimental paintings, pieces that might have some good bits but overall aren't good enough to put out in public. You not only spend a lot of time making these experimental pieces that don't turn out (and not making any money in the process), but then you have to spend a lot of time thinking about them and dissecting which things worked and which didn't and what to keep going with. Does it just need a small adjustment to make it good? Or should you just toss this whole idea out and start over? This also means you're spending your time thinking and puttering, which is great in and of itself, but you're not making any paintings you can sell, so again, you're still not making any money, while at the same time being frustrated with what you're doing. It's incredibly frustrating.<br />
<br />
Don't get me wrong, I really like many of the transition phase paintings I did, and many of them turned out really well, but they just weren't quite 'there', they weren't quite what I was looking for. So that's why I'll say I'm happy I've gotten my work to this stage, because this piece feels like it's 'there', so it's a milestone for me. I can now start to assemble a consistent group of work in this style to bring to art shows and send to galleries. Wooo! (also: relief)<br />
<br />
Here's a close up photos with for comparison of my old heavy paint style, with the new one, showing some texture:<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><span style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><a href="http://www.marcelguldemond.com/Artwork/DetailsSeries/909/peoplescapes" target="_blank"><img border="0" height="268" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh4z6eqLQou1MVZBo1Vu8Z2e63OFOfI3k3dAiCo84ayl6arBIAJIX-kQ5sXaU8kK1nrNmRevCViv0Jvn3pQzNHheBXUTS32Igc6M9CFr9uKUrjYa3VkNOd_ffIt7h-5O0401OCkYLrA4nxY/s400/HeavyPaintCloseup.jpg" width="400" /></a></span></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.marcelguldemond.com/Artwork/DetailsSeries/909/peoplescapes" target="_blank">Old style: There are probably at least 12 different carefully mixed colours in this section of sky.</a></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><span style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><a href="http://www.marcelguldemond.com/Artwork/DetailsSeries/944" target="_blank"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-dAjNFarXPes/V-Q_VYpPPjI/AAAAAAAAG6U/gKyHezvl5RsUPxTxjC4NzmBxeZoTfDmkgCLcB/s400/IMG_5809.JPG" width="400" /></a></span></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.marcelguldemond.com/Artwork/DetailsSeries/944" target="_blank">New Style. A different (better) way to juxtapose different colours in an area.</a></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<b>What's changed over time </b>is that I'm no longer working with really heavy paint with carefully chosen colour combinations, put down in a way that meant most brush strokes were final. I really loved the texture and colour I was getting from that, but I eventually found that style was, while kind of exciting to do, still too restrictive. I'll try to explain:<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><span style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><a href="http://www.marcelguldemond.com/Artwork/DetailsSeries/907/Available" target="_blank"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhnXQioOKM3WVUd_AwpOYdOqSYYryRewEyBOFdW1_zlntM3YtRAjj6vWl8z7Rqp2DudJ4UYvavgppYpVlXeGnChRW0axzZ8PKTMOMRcy0BAs0hvHmx0TaZ0gg7OJWbDT04UYibJ7DQenFJZ/s400/EdnaWeb.png" width="293" /></a></span></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: 12.8px; text-align: start;"><a href="http://www.marcelguldemond.com/Artwork/DetailsSeries/907/Available" target="_blank">"Edna" 2013 - an attempt at more comics,</a></span><br />
<span style="font-size: 12.8px; text-align: start;"><a href="http://www.marcelguldemond.com/Artwork/DetailsSeries/907/Available" target="_blank"> but still with heavy paint.</a></span></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0); font-size: 12.8px;"><br style="font-size: 12.8px;" /><b><br /></b><span style="font-size: small;"><b>Firstly, comics:</b> the heavy paint didn't mesh well with adding comics style panels and insets,which is something I really wanted to do. Why do I want to integrate comics and text and narrative elements into my painting? That's going to take another blog post, so you'll just have to take my word for it. Anyway, at first I tried mixing comic panels and heavy paint, but the two things just didn't go together really well. (see Edna above) Then I started adding photocopied text in the base layer of the paintings, and simplified the paint, no longer juxtaposing multiple colours in one brush stroke. (see waterfront below) This allowed me to get some of the comics and narrative elements into the paintings that I wanted to, but it still wasn't quite there. It was still a bit too inflexible. Which leads to the second point:</span><b style="font-size: 12.8px;"><br /></b></span><br />
<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0); font-size: 12.8px;"><span style="font-size: small;"><br /></span></span>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.marcelguldemond.com/Artwork/DetailsSeries/920/Available" target="_blank"><img border="0" height="332" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-10kUW7jI1vM/V-VmWD4TdxI/AAAAAAAAG7A/vUm4r2NE0doHxDLaSEFR-FTM5DJ6-lS_QCLcB/s400/waterfrontBlueBike_Web_920.png" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.marcelguldemond.com/Artwork/DetailsSeries/920/Available" target="_blank">waterfront, 40x48</a></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0); font-size: 12.8px;"><span style="font-size: small;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);"><b>Secondly, inflexibility: </b>the heavily painted brush strokes and even the type of composition in "waterfront", didn't allow for changing the composition of a painting while partway through. I couldn't really add or move any objects in the painting or change colours without wrecking the quality of the existing brush strokes. I had to get the composition right at the beginning and then stick with it after that, so I spent a lot of time futzing and stressing at the beginning of every piece. This just became too stressful. Now with this new style I've taken what I started with the comics + text elements further, and I'm allowing a lot of areas to stay as transparent glazes so they don't all have to be filled in. The thin layers of paint also mean I can just add in new things at later stages. </span><span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">So, with this new style I can just start painting without having to have every last detail figured out at the beginning, because I know I'll be able to change things as I go along. I can just get some pencils and markers down and then go with it. Which is really exciting.</span><br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><span style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><a href="http://www.marcelguldemond.com/Artwork/DetailsSeries/944" target="_blank"><img border="0" height="263" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-9EMm9kI1W7k/V-Vl5H1FqNI/AAAAAAAAG68/zzmTLYr-Vx0GlTebAfBSU9G-6fqEfp5WACLcB/s400/wanderHeartCoastalDetail2Web_944_2.png" width="400" /></a></span></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: 12.8px;"><a href="http://www.marcelguldemond.com/Artwork/DetailsSeries/944" target="_blank">Things changed quite a bit between the beginning and the end. It's nice not to have to perfect the composition right at the beginning, knowing you can make adjustments later on.</a></span></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);"></span>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<b></b><br />
<div>
<b><b></b></b></div>
<b>
Third, labour intensity: </b>the heavy paint paintings were just taking too long to make, and I couldn't find a way to speed them up. As an artist trying to make at least a partial living from my work, the time it takes to make a painting is always at the back of your mind, applying pressure and stress. If this new style can help me make paintings faster, it will hopefully alleviate some of that stress.<br />

Great Canadian Emptiness is $29 and you can order it online through my Shopify store at this address:</span></span><br /><br /><a href="http://aporia.myshopify.com/products/great-canadian-emptiness-artbook" style="color: #6dc6dd; word-wrap: break-word;" target="_blank" title="Great Canadian Emptiness order page">http://aporia.myshopify.com/products/great-canadian-emptiness-artbook</a><br /><br /><span style="font-size: 14px;"><span style="font-family: georgia, times, 'times new roman', serif;">You can also send me a personal cheque if you'd prefer to pay that way. <div dir="auto">
<br /><span style="font-size: 14px;"><span style="font-family: georgia, times, 'times new roman', serif;">I know I originally thought I could sell them for $25, but unfortunately I forgot to take the US-Canadian exchange rate into account when deciding on a US printer, so I've had to bump up the price a little bit.</span></span><br /><br /><span style="font-size: 14px;"><span style="font-family: georgia, times, 'times new roman', serif;">Now I'm going to get back to the studio to try to get some new paintings finished for the Toronto Artist Project again this coming February. I'll have more updates on that as the date gets closer, but there's more info here: <a href="http://www.theartistproject.com/" style="color: #6dc6dd; word-wrap: break-word;" target="_blank">The Artist Project</a></span></span></div>

Now I can finally get back to painting! (Woo!)<br />
I've been working on the site over the summer, and I believe it's much improved, especially for browsing through the paintings.<br />
<ul>
<li>It's now responsive/mobile friendly </li>
<li>I shrunk the header/navigation area so there's more screen space for the images</li>
<li>I added close-up / detail photos to some of the paintings, so you can get a better idea of the texture of the pieces. ( see image above )</li>
</ul>
Have a look, and let me know what you think. <br />
<br />
Cheers,<br />
Marcel<br />

<p> I haven't been doing much painting this summer, and I'm really starting to miss it. I've been attending to things like updating my website and looking into making an art book and things like that.</p>
<p>Soon I'll work my way through all of those administrative kind of things, and then I'll hit the studio with a long list of things to try out once I get back to painting. </p>
<p>In the meantime, I hope you're all having a great summer!<br></p>
<p> Cheers,</p>

Come on by the opening on Saturday, February 7th from 2 to 4 pm and say hi if you have a chance.<br />
<br />
Also, here's the artist's statement that I wrote up for the show:<br />
<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
<span id="docs-internal-guid-6caa8287-4b2b-8da1-5e0f-b7bd6cbb167b"><div dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.15; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 15px; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Undertexting artist statement </span><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 15px; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;"><br class="kix-line-break" /></span><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 15px; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;"><br class="kix-line-break" /></span><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 15px; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Undertexting describes a new art making process I've developed, as well as the idea that we as human beings use stories to understand everything in our lives; that the cultural context of everything we've read and watched and listened to forms the underlying context of almost every moment that we live. </span><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 15px; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;"><br class="kix-line-break" /></span><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 15px; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;"><br class="kix-line-break" /></span><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 15px; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">One could also say that undertexting is about the relativity of meaning, that all meaning is only ever understood within a cultural context, and how that cultural context is formed by the stories we consume. [One could also say that it's about how the background context of how we understand things is often a jumble, but that might just be a reflection of the disarray in my own mind.]</span><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 15px; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;"><br class="kix-line-break" /></span><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 15px; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;"><br class="kix-line-break" /></span><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 15px; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">As a art making process, Undertexting starts with a layer of torn photocopies of pages from my favourite books, mostly novels, that I paste on to the panel over top of the original drawings. I then paint on top of that with thin layers of paint (much thinner than I'd been using in the past) allowing you to see some of the underlying text, making that cultural context more explicit and part of the visual story.</span><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 15px; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;"><br class="kix-line-break" /></span><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 15px; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;"><br class="kix-line-break" /></span><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 15px; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Undertexting is a new art making process for me not only because of the underlying layers of text, but also because I've completely changed how the paintings look: I've begun to explicitly incorporate things from my background in comics. These include the use of inset panels, which I'm using to show key scenes in the stories the paintings are describing, and the use of more abstract line and flat colour based backgrounds, which set the emotional contexts and the settings for the stories they tell.</span><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 15px; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;"><br class="kix-line-break" /></span><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 15px; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;"><br class="kix-line-break" /></span><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 15px; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">When people would ask me what my paintings were about before Undertexting, I usually said that they were scenes from imaginary novels, or what it felt and looked like to be in an imaginary novel. These new paintings that make up Undertexting are, with their underlying layers of text and their use of visual storytelling elements from the comics medium, even more about scenes from, or being inside of, imaginary novels. I hope you enjoy them.</span><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 15px; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;"><br class="kix-line-break" /></span><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 15px; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;"><br class="kix-line-break" /></span><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 15px; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Cheers,</span><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 15px; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;"><br class="kix-line-break" /></span><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 15px; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Marcel Guldemond </span><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 15px; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;"><br class="kix-line-break" /></span><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 15px; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;"><br class="kix-line-break" /></span></div>

The name I'm going with for this new style, and this show, is 'undertexting'. This will be the first time this new style of work will be seen in public.<p>As I mentioned in my previous email, rebuilding my artistic process has turned out to be a lot harder than I thought it would be. I'm happy to say though, that I'm finally getting some results that justify the hard work, uncertainty, and the potential for a serious artistic disaster. Maybe I'm being overly dramatic, but sometimes in the middle of a long process like that when you don't know if it's going to work out on the other side and you have no idea if you know what you're doing, it definitely feels like an impending disaster of your own making. Fortunately I seem to have avoided that disaster thing.</p>

<span style="background-color: white; color: #606060; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 15px; line-height: 22.5px;">Hi Everyone,</span><br />
<br style="background-color: white; color: #606060; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 15px; line-height: 22.5px;" />
<span style="background-color: white; color: #606060; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 15px; line-height: 22.5px;">Wow, it's been a while since I've sent an update. It's not that I haven't been painting, it's that I've been working hard on developing a new style of painting, so I haven't really had any finished pieces to show publicly for a while. That's finally changed, as I've managed to finish some that I'm happy enough with to post online.</span><br />
<br style="background-color: white; color: #606060; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 15px; line-height: 22.5px;" />
<span style="background-color: white; color: #606060; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 15px; line-height: 22.5px;">I've had a lot of ideas floating around in my head as far as new ways (well, new to me, at least) for quite a while, and I finally decided I was going to have to try to work through them. I've been working on trying to learn from many of the fantastic comic book artists and illustrators and painters who are posting their work online, while still maintaining a style that's really my own. It hasn't been easy, but as you can see from the detail photo of 'grassy hill' above, it's finally been starting to come together.</span><br />
<br style="background-color: white; color: #606060; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 15px; line-height: 22.5px;" />
<span style="background-color: white; color: #606060; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 15px; line-height: 22.5px;">I'm now randomly pasting ripped up photocopies of pages from my favourite books as an underpainting layer, and I've dispensed with the really heavy blobby painting that I had been doing previously, replacing it with thinner layers that still reveal the text underneath. </span><br />
<br style="background-color: white; color: #606060; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 15px; line-height: 22.5px;" />
<span style="background-color: white; color: #606060; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 15px; line-height: 22.5px;">I haven't really figured out a good name for this style yet, but hopefully I come up with one before my new show, which is slated for February.</span><br />
<br style="background-color: white; color: #606060; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 15px; line-height: 22.5px;" />
<span style="background-color: white; color: #606060; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 15px; line-height: 22.5px;">That's right, I'll be having a show at the Elaine Fleck Gallery in Toronto in February, and it will be all new paintings in this new style! (Holy crap, I sure hope some of them turn out! (eep))</span><br />
<br style="background-color: white; color: #606060; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 15px; line-height: 22.5px;" />
<span style="background-color: white; color: #606060; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 15px; line-height: 22.5px;">I'll be sending out updates more frequently this fall with new paintings and news about the show. </span><br />
<br style="background-color: white; color: #606060; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 15px; line-height: 22.5px;" />
<span style="background-color: white; color: #606060; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 15px; line-height: 22.5px;">Thanks so much for reading,</span><br />
<span style="background-color: white; color: #606060; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 15px; line-height: 22.5px;">cheers,</span><br />
<span style="background-color: white; color: #606060; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 15px; line-height: 22.5px;">Marcel</span></div>

Actually it's not just reassembling, because it involves trying to incorporate a whole lot of new techniques and ideas, so it's a really messy maddening process. Mainly because you know you have to do it to expand your art, but you're not making any money while you're doing it, and you really don't know if you're going to end up with anything sellable at the end either. Ack. <br /><br />Here are a couple of detail photos. I originally started with some digital sketching, and I posted <a href="http://marcel-g-art.tumblr.com/post/84515198523/city-scape-sketch-stylistic-experimenting-with" target="_blank">one of the sketches on </a><u>tumblr</u>. The digital sketching was great for quickly working through a lot of ideas and I did a lot of them, but I eventually needed to try it out with actual paint and see how it looked in real life.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
'whale balloon tree swing' is one of the first results of this experimentation. I wasn't really concerned too much about the overall composition, as I was squeezing in as many of the different things I was trying out as possible. Things like allowing some of the text to show through, or having the little panels in the background, scratching a drawing into the paint, or adding abstract elements like the rectangles.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-tUhIl7dGsH8/U5oIutVtMXI/AAAAAAAAGaE/WSdtKIhvBxE/s1600/whaleBalloonTreeSwingWeb.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-tUhIl7dGsH8/U5oIutVtMXI/AAAAAAAAGaE/WSdtKIhvBxE/s1600/whaleBalloonTreeSwingWeb.png" height="320" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
It's 16"x20", so it's a relatively small painting. You can see I was trying to squeeze a lot into it.</div>
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This is a close up so you can see more of the texture.</div>

There are still a few additions I want to try out with this, but this layer of paint needs to dry first. There are also a bunch of little things that I'm not entirely happy with, but overall though, it's getting to where I want it, which makes it a successful experiment. <br /><br /><br /><center><a href='https://picasaweb.google.com/111587319385064085440/BloggerPictures?authkey=Gv1sRgCL6M0YTsscfDZQ#6019244142842016978'><img src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiVUX65OQTU2Xk3HTkUKuNrmTfRSfeBZCPcgqKRv-msfFoynAgdeXpIgE2LPXXdA4esGoEz6OnsNq7pneHpb1UJzdROcYGR3uxXTyo7plBdDfT1qhLXMbN4qNwbvxGq6bt2GtJpGt4e1Ug/s288/iphone_photo.jpg' border='0' width='480' height='377' style='margin:5px'></a></center><br /><br />Cheers,<br />Marcel <br /><br />Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00421160539054953028noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4868598916372292505.post-87696163643249520772014-05-16T13:05:00.001-04:002014-05-16T13:05:16.517-04:00Stay tuned<br /><br /><br /><center><a href='https://picasaweb.google.com/111587319385064085440/BloggerPictures?authkey=Gv1sRgCL6M0YTsscfDZQ#6014070536235293394'><img src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiexg3MB5g38ysiYrULggRHSlkSRWrXN9rLO6UlzR9sSurghBugeaOw7-jHc8xip3_UIPdbAl7LTLc7iDFKvQrO6ACYGhwhS3oQOjVTre5aeFtNRgDKCCuPiluA0QV6NXEMse0UwkykV9I/s288/iphone_photo.jpg' border='0' width='480' height='360' style='margin:5px'></a></center><br /><br />Experimenting with pasting text under my oil paintings, on the way to developing a new style. I've been making a foray back into the world of comics, sort of, by working on a kids book lately. I'm working with Corel Painter 12, which is fantastic for doodling, and I'm using Trello ( <a href="http://trello.com/">trello.com</a> ) for building the plot, which is a fantastic tool for project management, and outlining stories.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-or6s9c3NT24/UzcRjmVpC2I/AAAAAAAAGLk/O0orN-4Ppxk/s1600/climateArtSB1-8Thmb_bak.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-or6s9c3NT24/UzcRjmVpC2I/AAAAAAAAGLk/O0orN-4Ppxk/s1600/climateArtSB1-8Thmb_bak.png" height="265" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
But skip that trivial stuff, what's this book about, you ask? Well, it's about climate change and kids. And them talking their daft parents into doing something about it.<br />
<br />
It's a pretty scary subject, and although my 4 year old is still a little too young to talk about it, I can well imagine how tricky it's going to be to explain how crappy her future world will probably be. So I'm trying to write a book that will help parents engage with their kids about it. Actually, I'm really hoping that the act of reading it to their kids will motivate parents to do a bit more to solve the problem.<br />
<br />
I should really be working on paintings so I can make some money, but this is something I've been circling around for years and I figure it's time that I just get down and do it.<br />
<br />
As you can see in the image, it's currently at the thumbnail page, which means that it's pretty much only me who can figure out what's going on with it. Well, actually, if you could see my sketchbook you'd be able to see the plot. Then again, only I know which bits I'm going to keep out of that, so even there it doesn't make any sense yet. I'm sure I'll be posting and writing a lot more about this. Stay tuned!<br />
<br />
cheers,<br />

I'm currently working on some painting commissions, and I don't like to post work in progress photos of those until the pieces are all finished and the customer is happy, so unfortunately I won't be able to post many images of the next little while.<br />
<br />
I've also been thinking a lot lately about redesigning my website so people can order prints from it. It's always hard to gauge interest to know if it's worth it, but I guess I'll never know until I set it up.<br />
<br />
Finally, I'm also thinking about putting together a kids book, or two. I've been working on my digital illustration skills a lot and they've been coming along well. Now I'm thinking about putting together a book because I love kids books. I have no idea if it'll be good, but I'm pretty sure it'll be fun. :)<br />
<br />
More on all of those things later.<br />

The <a href="http://marcel-g-art.tumblr.com/post/78007230682/rain-boots-painting-getting-packed-up-for-shipping" target="_blank">new painting "rain boots"</a> made it safely, which was a big relief because the paint was still pretty soft when I shipped it. Also, the person at my local post office didn't seem to know what he was doing, so I was a little anxious that he may not have processed it correctly. And then it would get lost in a warehouse somewhere or something like that. But fortunately that didn't happen. </div>

<a href="http://www.elainefleckgallery.com/index.html" style="color: #6dc6dd; word-wrap: break-word;" target="_blank">The Elaine Fleck Gallery in Toronto</a> will be showing my paintings again for the month of March. The gallery's normal hours are Wednesday to Sunday, 12-5pm, and the opening will be this Saturday from 2-4pm.<br />
<br />
Unfortunately I'll be unable to make it to the opening this time around, but hopefully I'll be able to see some of you again next time.<br />
<br />
If you can't make it to the show, I've included the new painting "rain boots" in this email, and<a href="http://www.marcelguldemond.com/Artwork/Series?seriesName=Fleck%20Gallery%20March%202014&PageNumber=1" style="color: #6dc6dd; word-wrap: break-word;" target="_blank"> you can view the other pieces that will be in the show online.</a><br />

Hey Everybody, I'd like to announce that I will be having a show in Toronto along with Maggie Broda for the month of march. I'm currently working on a brand new painting for this show. (No pressure on that painting. Ha. ha. ... eep.)<br />
<br />
The opening is set for<span style="background-color: white; font-family: HelveticaNeue, 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, 'Lucida Grande', sans-serif; font-size: 13px;"> Saturday March 1. 2-4pm. I'm not sure yet if I'll be able to attend, but if you're in Toronto, you'll be able to check out some of my recent paintings. And the new one, if it turns out and I don't burn it first.</span><br />
<span style="background-color: white; font-family: HelveticaNeue, 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, 'Lucida Grande', sans-serif; font-size: 13px;"><br /></span>
<span style="background-color: white;"><span style="font-family: HelveticaNeue, Helvetica Neue, Helvetica, Arial, Lucida Grande, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;">You can follow me via </span><a href="https://twitter.com/marcel_g" style="font-family: HelveticaNeue, 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, 'Lucida Grande', sans-serif; font-size: 13px;" target="_blank">@marcel_g on twitter</a><span style="font-family: HelveticaNeue, Helvetica Neue, Helvetica, Arial, Lucida Grande, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;"> or via <a href="http://marcel-g-art.tumblr.com/">marcel-g-art.tumblr.com</a> for more updates, and even better, you can<a href="http://www.marcelguldemond.com/SignUp" target="_blank"> sign up for my mailing list</a>, which I use to occasionally spam people's inboxes with announcements about upcoming shows. </span></span><br />

<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-KAaU5R_zgXw/UscrCJ2LfHI/AAAAAAAAGH8/kpV_ObDlROY/s1600/scratchthemout.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-KAaU5R_zgXw/UscrCJ2LfHI/AAAAAAAAGH8/kpV_ObDlROY/s400/scratchthemout.png" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
1st of a series of digital paintings I'm embarking on. Not sure where this series is going to go or if it'll be worth the effort, but what the hell, I have a day job, so I can indulge in some experimentation now and then.<br />
<br />
cheers,<br />

<br />Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00421160539054953028noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4868598916372292505.post-12655648753909545262013-12-19T16:17:00.000-05:002014-03-29T09:34:01.810-04:00Starting a new digital painting series<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-3lbFYRe_rWA/UrNhQPzE8DI/AAAAAAAAGHA/kLEnXgdixHs/s1600/offshore-draft.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="361" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-3lbFYRe_rWA/UrNhQPzE8DI/AAAAAAAAGHA/kLEnXgdixHs/s640/offshore-draft.png" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
This is a doodling around draft image, and as you can see, I'm still learning this medium. And hoo boy do I have a long way to go. But I have a series of illustrations in my head that I really want to do, so I think it'll be worth it to spend the time to develop a new style to do them in.<br />
<br />
cheers,<br />

<br />
The show is still up for another week or so in case you're in Toronto and would like to go see the paintings in person. The paintings do look so much better in person than they do online.<br />
<br />
When my friends came to the opening they were all commenting about how they loved the texture in the paintings and how they were surprised to see it because it doesn't show up in the online photos. I'm not sure how to capture the texture better, but maybe it's something I'll have to work on.<br />

<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I'll still post on this blog with announcements and when I post the photos for finished paintings because this feed is what I programmed to show up on my website home page. </div>

Update: haha, whoops, here's the link for my new Tumblr: <a href="http://marcel-g-art.tumblr.com/" target="_blank">http://marcel-g-art.tumblr.com/</a><br />

I hope you’ve all had a nice summer. I can’t speak for anyone else, but for me summer always seems to be over much too quickly. This one was nice and we did take the kids outside as much as we could, but it’s always over before it actually feels like it was a summer. One thing I did do was clean up and re-organized my studio, and I’m hopeful that the reorganization will allow me to be a little more productive. </div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #505050; font-family: Arial; font-size: 14px; line-height: 21px;">
</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #505050; font-family: Arial; font-size: 14px; line-height: 21px;">
Which is something I’m going to need because I have another show coming up this November at the Elaine Fleck Gallery in Toronto. The opening will be Thursday November 7th, at 6pm. More details here: <a href="http://www.elainefleckgallery.com/events.html" style="color: #336699;" target="_blank">http://www.elainefleckgallery.com/events.html</a></div>

Special thanks to my employers at <a href="http://www.fluidmedia.ca/" style="color: #336699;" target="_blank">Fluid Media Inc.</a> for being so flexible and allowing me to take some time away from work to get my paintings ready for the show. </div>

November seems far away, but it really isn’t, and I’m already getting wound up about whether this next set of paintings will compare well with my previous shows. </div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #505050; font-family: Arial; font-size: 14px; line-height: 21px;">

The robot in the top image will be there, and I'm planning on some big story book type landscapes, but I can't really say yet what the final results are going to be. Stay tuned!</div>

In the meantime, I've turned my attention to cleaning up and re-arranging the studio so it'll function better as a creative space. <br /><br />I've also ordered some new brushes. It's a happy thing when they arrive from rosemary & co in the uk. My previous favourite brushes were discontinued generic house brand that I pulled from the clearance bin, and I've been struggling to find something comparable ever since. These fit the bill though, so I'm really happy about that, and these new ones are making more excited to get back to painting. <br /><br /><br /><br /><center><a href='https://picasaweb.google.com/111587319385064085440/BloggerPictures?authkey=Gv1sRgCL6M0YTsscfDZQ#5890506231780131202'><img src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQfJlPJz0zIyUc0w_8lPNpvetpTzKKhb_O5kNElhCYalRn7l3YLTOOt26ZJJOSyXdl8w-dOCn2PEfkVsB-qWJAWgraH0Ri17HZoTUQp_7ZesZ8lc27xXaPjNMwVvJFXOTI1rcgn8oY6Oc/s288/1.jpg' border='0' width='300' height='400' style='margin:5px'></a></center><br />Cheers,<br />Marcel <br />Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00421160539054953028noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4868598916372292505.post-35701586746896802172013-06-10T16:57:00.003-04:002013-06-10T16:57:41.879-04:00new paintings re-added to the websitesee them here: <a href="http://www.marcelguldemond.com/Artwork/Series?seriesName=wall%20space%20gallery%202013&PageNumber=1">http://www.marcelguldemond.com/Artwork/Series?seriesName=wall%20space%20gallery%202013&PageNumber=1</a><br />

More specifically, the paintings are scenes <br />where these kinds of stories could happen. <br /><br />In that sense, they could be seen as illustrations of imaginary novels, so you could say <br />they're a kind of imaginary narrative illustrationism. Or you could just say they're big <br />impressionistic comics.<br /><br />That'll probably get edited again, but I think it describes things pretty well. <br /><br />Cheers,<br />Marcel <br />Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00421160539054953028noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4868598916372292505.post-62231239995855087542013-04-26T13:21:00.001-04:002013-04-26T13:21:31.045-04:00So many ideas, so little time! I'm having a bit of fun playing around with Corel Painter, which I just bought because it was on sale. No idea if I'll ever use it for anything art projects, but I often feel like I need to stay in touch with comics and digital art. Speaking of projects, I have to get to the studio to get some paintings done for my show coming up.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00421160539054953028noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4868598916372292505.post-70504223759302424212013-04-20T14:58:00.001-04:002013-04-20T14:58:13.947-04:00A pier.
