January Show Opening Confirmed

Hi Everyone,

Here's the invite to my show opening, which is January 12th, from 2 to 4 pm.

If you're in Toronto, please come out and say hi if you get a chance, it would be great to see you. This will be my first show with only large paintings. I was nervous about that but the gallery has already sold 2 of the 5 pieces, so it's off to a good start. :)

cheers,
Marcel

Last News & Notes for a while

I'm busy finishing Paintings for my January show, so I won't have time to post much, if at all. I might post some photos on twitter.

Some newsy bits:

- the show at Cyclelogik in Ottawa opens tomorrow night, December 7 @ 8pm - I'll have a few small pieces in it, and I'm hoping on going to the opening.
- the opening for my show in January has been confirmed for saturday the 12th from 2-4pm, in Toronto at the Elaine Fleck gallery.
- the piece that was supposed to go in the Elaine Fleck December show has been sold, so I won't have anything in that show.
- All my new work is going into the January show, which is my first one with only large paintings, so I'm both excited and nervous about that one. If you're in Toronto please come by to see it if you get a chance.

Parka people - finished

This will be part of my show in Toronto in January. It's 40"x60" so it's on the larger side.

Now I have time to paint one more large piece. But i have to figure out what to do first. Figuring out what to paint next is always fraught with anxiety because you have to commit to an idea and hope it works out.

Marcel

Shows! Coming up!

Yes, that's right everyone, I have some shows coming up!

December is the month that everyone does their big group shows, and this year is no different:
-In Ottawa, I’ll have some pieces in the Holiday Sweat-ER - Cyclelogik's 5th Annual Holday Art Show - the opening is December 7th. It looks like there are a lot of really good artists in this show, so if you’re in Ottawa, it’ll be worth checking out.
-If you’re in Toronto, I’ll have this coastal painting in the Elaine Fleck Gallery’s December show called “Presents”

a few days before

January I’ll be having a show at the Elaine Fleck Gallery in Toronto. I’m very excited about this one and I’ll be debuting the brand new paintings that I’ve been hard at work at for the last several months. (The image at the top is one of the paintings in progress.) The paintings are looking really good, so I hope you can make it out to see them. The opening will most likely be January 10th.  I’ll post the info to my website and blog once I can confirm the actual date for that.

June 2013 I’ll have a show at Wall Space Gallery in Ottawa. If you’ve been to Wall Space you’ll know what a great gallery it is, so I’m really happy to be showing there next year. I’ll post details about the show once we’ve figured them out.

As always, if you'd like to follow me on a more day to day basis: on twitter and Google+

Cheers,
Marcel

Should I keep them?

Thinking about painting right over these folks to simplify the painting. My instinct was to put them in though, so I'm not sure. Also wondering why I can't do a simple landscape painting anymore. :-/

boreal skies

I've posted a proper photo of my latest landscape painting, called 'boreal skies'. It's my first try at 40"x60", which feels pretty freakin big! I really enjoyed having so much space to pile the paint onto, so I hope I sell some of these big ones so I can keep doing more of them.

Art opening tonight & paintings with villages

At the Ottawa Art Gallery for the Stop Motion show.

In the meantime I've finished the village, and I'm on to the trees. Really hope I get this done tomorrow to give the week a nice clean ending.

New Robots and Show Details: STOP MOTION

Hi Everyone! I have finished two new robot paintings and I`m showing them right now in a show called STOP MOTION. The show is being put on by the Ottawa Art Gallery`s Art Rental and Sales section, and it's in conjuction with the Ottawa Animation Festival and Nuit Blanche in Ottawa. There are a number of other really good artists participating, all with comic book and animation backgrounds. The list of artists includes internationally renowned Dave Cooper. I was able to see his paintings when I dropped mine off and they are really beautiful and definitely worth going to see.

This exhibition will run from 11th September – 6th October 2012, and the opening reception is Thursday 20th September starting at 6pm. I'll be there for the opening, so please come by if you want to check out some really good art. I'm excited because it's been a really long time since I've been able to go to an opening. Hope to see you there!

The Animation Festival runs from September 19-23, and Nuit Blanche is on September 22nd. (I think that's when it is, their website isn't very forthcoming with the date.)

As well, I'll be posting more announcements about more upcoming shows in the near future. (Exciting! and nerve-wracking!)

Cheers,
Marcel

Robots in progress

This is the second robot I'm currently working on (see previous post for the other one) - I'm hoping to get them done for the show in September. I still have to confirm details about that one, but I'll try to post it here soon.

Switching to robots

For a show in September that's related to the animation festival. I'm doing a couple of smaller robot portraits, and
I'll get back to the big landscape after these are done. Here's one of them:

These clouds are done, now it's robots!

Time to stop fiddling on these clouds and get to work on some smaller robot paintings. I'm hoping to get them done for a show at the Ottawa Art Gallery that I'm participating in. It's in September in conjunction with the animation festival. Also, Dave Cooper is in the show too, which is exciting. I'll blog more about it later.

Marcel

More clouds in progress

I feel like I'm plodding along with this, but it's a big piece @ 40"x60", so I might be painting faster than I think I am.

I might tweet some photos later too. Otherwise, have a good weekend everyone!

200lbs of cat litter. Also, some painting in progress

Making progress, but feeling a little slow this week, which is due to spending time at night cleaning the basement, which flooded due to a heavy rain last Sunday.

That's where the cat litter comes in: we threw down 200lbs of it to soak up the water in the carpet. After hauling a pile of stuff out of there first, of course. (holy crap, where did all that stuff come from?!?! Oh yeah, that would be me.) any way, once We shoveled out the cat litter and the carpet dried out, I spent 2 evenings with the carpet cleaner trying to get it to a passable level of clean. Which is where it is now, so we can start hauling all of that stuff back in there once it dries, again.

All of which is to say, sometimes life crops up and gets in the way and you end up extra tired and your work doesn't go as well as you'd like it to. I shouldn't complain, I have it pretty good, but there it is.

Anyway, here's the painting, I've just finished some more of the clouds:

Back to painting today

Had a bit of a crazy week, but I'm back in the studio today, and I've started on the impasto layer on this big landscape piece. Not really happy with what I did yesterday, so I'm going to paint over that bit again. It's a bit too flat maybe, so I'll try with a different colour set.

Marcel

Return of the biplane - workinprogress

Lots of little tweaks to the underpainting, which is now all finished. I'll start the blobby painting next week. The two previous appearances of the biplane were Where are You Dr Jones? and The Strange Adventure of Dr Jones
Apparently this one needs Dr Jones in the title too! ;)

Cheers,
Marcel

Town & trees - more workinprogress

I'll probably go back in and adjust things a bit more, but it's starting to look like something now that initial layer is done on the foreground trees. I'll post some more pics later on twitter.

Marcel

Clouds, hills - workinprogress

Still not really happy with the shadows on this hill though. Hopefully not too much more scraping and repainting...

It's got clouds

My latest work in progress:

This will be the largest single panel painting I've done to date. (I've done a couple of triptychs which are bigger)

I struggled a bit with trying to figure out what it was going to be, but now it's starting to take shape. Hurrah.

Marcel

I erased this guy

Sometimes when I'm getting stuck on what to do with the next painting, I start doodling on the panel, which is where this came from:

Then I eventually figured what I wanted to do, so I erased him a started in on this:

Proper photos tomorrow hopefully!

Red caped super robot

Here it is with the sky and the clouds all finished. Up next, trees and houses. I feel like I'm getting somewhere, but it's hard not to feel like you're stuck in second gear when you're in the middle stages of a big painting like this.

Blue sky morning - ontheeasel , workinprogress

As you can see, I'm working on the big super robot, painting in the blue sky behind the clouds first. Mornings in the studio are nice for painting, but in the afternoon when the sun comes around it turns into a stinkin hot little sweat box. But hey, then I can take my shirt off and paint like Picasso! :-P

Red cape robot

The underpainting in progress. And yup, his cape is going to be red. Actually, I find it interesting that the robot reads as a he, instead of a she or an it.

Now to figure out what colours he/she/it is going to be...
