New #workinprogress for my June show in Ottawa

"Stories and places" will happen at Wallspace Gallery in Ottawa, with the opening coinciding with WestFest, this will be one of the new pieces in the show.
Ok, back to painting,
Cheers,

Undertexting - Show coming up in February

It'll be at the Elaine Fleck Gallery in Toronto, and it'll be all new paintings done in my new 'undertexting' style. (I don't know if that's the name for it or not, but it's what I'm going with for now)

I've been working hard to force myself out of my creative comfort zone to develop this, and I'm finally starting to get results:

Here is a work in progress where I've just finished pasting the text:

I've been asked about why I've changed my style so much, but I'll have to write a post about that later because right now I need to get more painting done for this show.

Cheers, marcel

Painty painty - next phase of experimentals

Close up of my plan for world domination, er, I mean of my latest painting experiment. There are still a few additions I want to try out with this, but this layer of paint needs to dry first. There are also a bunch of little things that I'm not entirely happy with, but overall though, it's getting to where I want it, which makes it a successful experiment.

Marcel

robot blimp painting workinprogress ontheeasel

I'm currently working on a commission, and the customer has graciously allowed me to post work in progress photos. Here are some details of the pencil stage. Yes, it has blimps. As it must. ;)

But skip that, what's this kids' book about?

I've been making a foray back into the world of comics, sort of, by working on a kids book lately. I'm working with Corel Painter 12, which is fantastic for doodling, and I'm using Trello ( trello.com ) for building the plot, which is a fantastic tool for project management, and outlining stories.

But skip that trivial stuff, what's this book about, you ask? Well, it's about climate change and kids. And them talking their daft parents into doing something about it.

It's a pretty scary subject, and although my 4 year old is still a little too young to talk about it, I can well imagine how tricky it's going to be to explain how crappy her future world will probably be. So I'm trying to write a book that will help parents engage with their kids about it. Actually, I'm really hoping that the act of reading it to their kids will motivate parents to do a bit more to solve the problem.

I should really be working on paintings so I can make some money, but this is something I've been circling around for years and I figure it's time that I just get down and do it.

As you can see in the image, it's currently at the thumbnail page, which means that it's pretty much only me who can figure out what's going on with it. Well, actually, if you could see my sketchbook you'd be able to see the plot. Then again, only I know which bits I'm going to keep out of that, so even there it doesn't make any sense yet. I'm sure I'll be posting and writing a lot more about this. Stay tuned!

marcel

Painting experiments today

I'm trying to find a drawing style that I can glaze over with oil colour.

I'm narrowing it down to ink markers or traditional India ink.

I really like this pencil drawing though, so I'm not going to ink it or colour over it. Maybe I'll do it digitally later:

Scratch them out - new digital painting

1st of a series of digital paintings I'm embarking on. Not sure where this series is going to go or if it'll be worth the effort, but what the hell, I have a day job, so I can indulge in some experimentation now and then.

Starting a new digital painting series

This is a doodling around draft image, and as you can see, I'm still learning this medium. And hoo boy do I have a long way to go. But I have a series of illustrations in my head that I really want to do, so I think it'll be worth it to spend the time to develop a new style to do them in.

marcel

Moving photo posts to Tumblr

My work-in-progress photos often look pretty craptacular when I post using Blogpress & Blogger, so I'm going to switch to Tumblr for those.

I'll still post on this blog with announcements and when I post the photos for finished paintings because this feed is what I programmed to show up on my website home page.

Update: haha, whoops, here's the link for my new Tumblr: http://marcel-g-art.tumblr.com/

Marcel

Boreal skies II - Underpainting workinprogress

I often wish I could say it's finished at this stage, but really, it's nowhere close, knowing how the paintings look when they're finished.

Also, I've deleted all the social media apps off of my phone in an effort to avoid being distracted while I get ready for this upcoming show, so my twitter feed will be quiet for a while. I'll keep posting my progress to this blog though.

Cheers,
Marcel

Standing on a terrace - coastal workinprogress

finished the image part, abstract background coming up. I'm happy with how this is turning out, I just hope I don't mess it up from here. Ack.

Also, I now have a show coming up in November in Toronto at the Elaine Fleck gallery, and I'm hoping this piece will be in it. I'll post the details tomorrow. Yay.

Cheers,
Marcel

Clouds are done - workinprogress

Coastal painting I'm working on. I'm happy with how this one's turning out. Not sure how I'm going to treat the background area around the picture part, but I'll just have to figure that out another day.

That's it for me this week, have a great weekend everyone!

Marcel
